10SFG is also sending $3M cash to Seattle. So a major overpay here. Note that injury risk is a major factor here.
Now it's being reported that the cash going to Seattle is $6M, which takes this just past the overpay mark into rejection territory.
Didn't see that coming.
I’m alright with it, Disco has had some good moments, ankle has really been dodgy, Haniger, feel bad for him in a way, another injury riddled season for his home town team, but at least he gets to go back to familiar surroundings. Ray is a wildcard, are the Giants hoping he opts out? Who knows
I like it for the Giants. I mean, first of all, overpaying for quality SP is pretty much the theme of the offseason, so the value differential doesn’t bother me. And while he is no longer an ace, Ray is in the better quadrant of the league if you look at K-BB%, which is meant to be the best ERA predictor. The partial season this year is a pain, so the G-men NEED to keep wheeling. The bit that nags at me the most is actually the opt-out, where we have to thread that needle (again!) so a guy can be good, but not too good. Treat the boy well, Giants brass!
If Ray was healthy, I'd understand the overpay. But most guys don't come back from TJ looking sharp
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Giants gave Ray an extension at some point before his opt out date. Seems like a way for them to get a SP signed
So the cash for ‘24 is about even for both teams? Mariners get a bat and a pitcher for all of ‘24 and the Giants get a pitcher at some point during the season.
Correct, but it saves money for Seattle longer-term.
I like it for the Mariners and the Giants who look to be punting on ‘24 and building for the future two years to me. Still time and plenty of free agents to sign though.
