2If the Red Sox are really trying to cut salary, the Tigers would likely accept this deal giving them an experienced closer, an upbeat LF/DH, and a previous first-round draft pick with a great hit tool, all for their 6th or 7th-best starting pitcher, an arm that Boston needs more. The Red Sox save $34 million in 2024 and $88 million total. The Tigers get about three more wins in a tight division and their future 2B, while the Red Sox get enough money back to sign Montgomery while adding a AAA SP.
So I think the Tigers are going to win the central. No idea if they’d be willing to take on the contracts of Masa and Kenley but I think this makes sense for both teams. Tigers are another team with an abundance of SP depth which a Gipson-Long may not hurt as much as all those above him in depth chart. I would imagine Boston’s new director of pitching, Justin Willard, knows him well from their time together with Twins.
