4Does Sale have anything left?
Several years of all star level performance left in the tank, and he’s pitching for a new contract this year. This isn’t a trade the Red Sox would consider for him.
Is he really pitching for a new contract though? He's 35 and gotten paid well over $100 million. Yes, he's missed time in recent years due to injuries and he's been an elite pitcher, so he definitely is out there with a mindset to prove that he's a competitor. However, a new contract isn't what's motivating him. I'm not buying that argument. Also, it's not a "new" contract as he has a Club Option in 2025. On another note, I agree that this isn't a return that I envision Boston going for. I don't have much faith in the depth of their starting pitchers for 2024 so if Sale's any good, they'll want to keep him on, at least until mid-July. The Sox traded Verdugo to their rival for guys who are "pitching pipeline" and I expect any trade big trade they make before the season starts will be with a similar mindset. This trade isn't a good match for me. Sale to the Braves is a fun idea midseason if he's healthy and they have a need. Past that though, this isn't one that I think either team would consider.
It’s actually a vesting option; $20M Vesting Option Vests if Sale finishes top-10 in 2024 Cy Young voting and does not finish year on IL. Value may increase based on GS and Cy Young finishes.
