4Padres are in win now mode (last chance with Soto, potentially). SP and Closer are needs (Burnes and Williams are top notch). Not much of a need for Merrill with Bogaerts, Machado, Kim around, so moving Merrill is painful, but acceptable. Weimer pairs well with Grisham in CF. Lesko is also painful to give up, but gotta give to get.
Brewers are not ready to give on winning for the foreseeable future by doing something like this. Milwaukee says no thanks.
Milwaukee can trade Burnes/Williams/Weimer seperately and get a better return for themselves. Rather than just two prospects they could triple that and help themselves in multiple areas. They are trying to extend Adames and have Turang to step in if needed.
Without Woodruff, the starters have already taken a huge hit. Last thing you want to do is have a middling season and lose Burnes for nothing. I suppose you could wait for the trade deadline and see if Ashby or perhaps Gasser have been able to somewhat replace Woodruff. Maybe the 20 mil or so left to spend in FA nets you a Woodruff replacement as well. But a small market team like MKE needs cheap great talent to compete. Merrill (and perhaps Lesko) could be that talent and Merrill should be ready by end of 2024/early 2025. Pair Merrill with Chourio and the other youngsters and you have a quick rebuild. Abner is the next big closer out Milwaukee, so losing Williams hurts but they'd be okay. Competitive again by 2025. If Padres would accept this, I doubt MKE says no.
