Diaz is not needed this year so rolling the dice on Treinen is just spending that money on needed depth. If Treinen is on the IL, the A's will have a roster spot open to add (or to protect) a Rule 5 player.

Two issues. One, Treinen would have to be on the 40 man roster until February because players can't go on the 60 day IL until then. 40 man rosters get set in November, with the Rule 5 Draft happening in December. Two, Treinen's '24 salary is tied to his health. He's probably going to get $1 MM and it would make no sense for the Dodgers to flip him at that salary for Diaz.
