You lost me when you said Duran has the defensive chops to handle CF. Duran is a terrible outfielder. He’s not vaccinated because he doesn’t need to be. Instead of catching anything, Duran is far more likely to just misplay the virus.

Oh whoops. I looked at his savant numbers, and his outfield jump, sprint speed, and arm strength are all fine. Why is his glove so bad? That’s baffling. I guess the question for a Marlins fan would be: would you trade Garrett Cooper for a shot on if Duran can figure it out in Miami?

Let's break this down, piece by piece. The Cubs are reported to be working out a deal with Eric Hosmer, which potentially means that incumbent Matt Mervis could be moved in a deal. The Cubs send out some inexpensive and high ceiling players in Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel, but they bring back the future cornerstone of their lineup in Rafael Devers as well as a great bat in Garrett Cooper who can worry about occupying the DH spot and will only need to occasionally play at 1B when resting Hosmer. While the Red Sox do send out top prospect Triston Casas, they hedge against his production by bringing in lefty contact/power hitter Matt Mervis, who grew up and played college on the East Coast. With this trade, the Red Sox completely recalibrate their infield, playing Morel at 3B, Wendle at SS, Story at 2B, and potentially Mervis at 1B. Most importantly, they bring in a significant boost to the rotation in Pablo Lopez, with whom they could engage in extension talks. The Marlins use their rotation depth to significantly improve the ceiling of their offensive production. Triston Casas is a top-25 prospect who would quickly slot into 1B for the Fish and serve as a lineup cornerstone for the next half decade. Meanwhile, the Marlins also add post-hype prospect Jarren Duran, who has the defensive chops necessary to sit in CF and may just need a change of scenery in order to realize his offensive potential.
