2Meneses is going to be 31 years old and nothing he's done in the minors or in foreign leagues indicates he will sustain the lofty numbers. I think the Brewers would rather have Tellez and his production and a good SP in Lauer than take a flyer on Meneses and a RP.
You have an understandable argument, but I wouldn't have posted this trade if I didn't think the trade had merit. Unfortunately, I had to leave this site before I could post my comments on this trade, but I will do so now. I don't expect Meneses to repeat this season's performance, but I do think the projection that Baseball Reference has for him is realistic. It projects a .284/.336/.479 with an OPS of .816. That includes 13 home runs in 292 at bats. Tellez was .219/.306/.461 with an OPS of .767. Rowdy had 35 homers in 529 at bats. I think if this trade was made Meneses would get about the same number of at bats as Tellez had last year and I doubt if he'd hit 35 homers, but he would be an asset in the lineup. He also is a right-handed hitter, and the Brewers seem to think the left-handed Singleton will get some playing time at 1B. Lauer is included in the trade because Washington needs starting pitchers that can accumulate innings. I believe Lauer can be replaced by many of the free agents that are currently available, or in another trade. The relief pitcher, Thompson, is coming off an injury, but he showed potential when he pitched. I believe he also has minor league options left which makes him available on an as needed basis if he doesn't make 24 man roster out of spring training. My other reason for this trade is salary. Both players the Brewers receive do not reach arbitration till 2025 and 2026. The projected arbitration figures for Tellez and Lauer are $5.3M and $5.2M. I would hope the Brewers could put the money they save in this trade to good use to improve the team even further. And, besides saving the money, I believe these players can help the team.
