Looking at the deal from each team's perspective: The Marlins clear up the rotation logjam by sending LHP Trevor Rogers to the Cubs and 1 year of Joey Wendle to White Sox for two potential big bats coming back from the Cubs: 3B Christopher Morel and 1B Matt Mervis. Though some may be turned off by Morel's defensive performance at 3B last year (especially when comparing it to Wendle's brilliance at the position), the context is important: Morel jumped from AA to the major leagues and was asked to shift time between infield and outfield, spending most of his 2022 season in CF. He has the athleticism, and he's on record saying 3B is his preferred position. His combination of speed, power, and general friendliness will bring a welcome addition to the Marlins clubhouse. As for Matt Mervis, the lefty slugger balances his approach with both power and contact and is a good bet to break out in 2023 at the big league level. The White Sox make a big move at 3B, offloading a good portion of Yoan Moncada's contract while filling the empty spot with defensive whiz Joey Wendle, whose contact approach from the left side will provide a good counterbalance to the considerable right-handed power the team exhibits. In this deal, the White Sox agree to pay down $15m of the $41m left on Moncada's contract, opening up needed spending room to fortify their bullpen. The Cubs take a hit in the youth department by sending out fan favorites Christopher Morel and Matt Mervis. However, they bring back a potential ace in LHP Trevor Rogers. Though Rogers struggled mightily in 2022, he still exhibits the stuff that could make him a TOR guy. He will be familiar with many of the concepts the Cubs will give him, having come of out of the pitch design factory that is the Miami Marlins, but the Cubs may see a tweak that the Marlins haven't yet discovered. What's more, they add a veteran bat in Yoan Moncada, who will lock down the 3B position. Moncada was a plus defender at 3B last year, giving the Cubs quite possibly the best defensive infield in baseball heading into 2023. As a hitter, Moncada isn't so far removed from his 4.0 fWAR season in 2021 where he showed a combination of patience, power, and launch angle and put together a 120 wRC+. The Cubs bring Moncada on for effectively a 2 year, $26m deal.

Definitely a no from the White Sox in this scenario. Even if they're fed up with Moncada, they wouldn't front load their costs (paying down Moncada's salary while also paying Wendle) for what's essentially a swap of glove-first 3Bmen.
