Putting aside for the moment that I think a Yankee-Red Sox trade is inherently unlikely, I do think this trade does a fairly good job of addressing both New York's and Boston's needs, as specified below: Yankees Needs 1. Left-handed left fielder who can actually hit. 2. Payroll relief to allow for additional roster moves without exceeding the $293M CBT threshold. 3. Alleviate infield logjam. 4. Left-handed relief specialist. Red Sox Needs 1. Shortstop to replace Story for most (possibly all) of 2023 (Story’s return from UCL surgery is unclear at this point). 2. Significant upgrade at second base (over Christian Arroyo and/or Enmanuel Valdez). As a Yankee fan, it's tough to say goodbye to Gleyber Torres, but with Peraza and Volpe likely to be impactful in 2023 and with Torres trade value peaking, now is the time to do this.
