3SD swapping out Trent Grisham, Steven Wilson (minors) and Jose Azocar (minors) for Ramon Laureano, Paul Blackburn and Seth Brown. In this scenario, Brandon Dixon (minors) would go down for Fernando Tatis Jr in late April. A's swapping out Paul Blackburn, Seth Brown and Ramon Laureano for Kyle Muller, Conner Capel and Trent Grisham. For SD, both Laureano and to a lesser extent Brown can hold down CF until Tatis comes back, as well as Adam Engel. Brown's emerging bat in CF might be worth the not-good defense. Swapping out Azocar for Brown or Laureano is a massive upgrade alone. Blackburn can be the long man/depth guy out of the pen, or into the rotation if injury. Love him as a depth piece there in this role. A's run an OF of Ruiz-Grisham-Bleday with Capel as the 4th/maybe starter if he hits his way on. Ruiz, who is still new to the position, can learn CF from the best, and Grisham is a good deadline trade piece after he tutors the youngsters before going to a contender. A's simply have too many SP and need to clear Blackburn's place - nothing against him, he's a great pitcher who has a massive IQ who already made an all-star team, no, this is more of a "better fit" trade than anything, but there's a clear path to both teams benefiting here.
Down vote for Oakland. The A's kept Blackburn and Laureano because they're betting on the rebound; this deal negates that plan while costing them Seth Brown. Ruiz needs reps in CF and I'd rather the coaching staff mentor him than swapping three starters for a player-mentor in Grisham.
A's decline. Grisham's already being paid in arb, and this is a "sell low" on Blackburn who they feel will rebound from injury and regain value. The only player they've acquired since the teardown started that had less than 6 years service time available was Pina (1yr $4M, club option will not be used) as a backup to Shea Langeliers (because Soderstrom's not quite ready to fill that slot). A's are not historically a 'trade and flip' team.
