7This trade does not happen IRL. Expecting downvotes on each side, and am eager to hear your feedback on why this does not get done. Not an Orioles or Guardians fan, and hoping to learn more about each fanbases perspective on the next 5ish years in terms of roster. Don't be a dick.
I think it is much more likely that the Orioles extend Mullins than trade him, much more. A proven excellent defensive CF that hits at the top of the order (or even in the middle of the order) like Mullins is extremely valuable to a team. For all the hype that Williams is deservingly getting he still hasn’t thrown a pitch at the major league level, so there is risk. And Quantrill is what he is, a back end of the rotation SP. Keep the bat over the pitcher, always. No reason for the Orioles to take such a risk on a SP like Williams right now. Trading for 2 years of Quantrill to fill out the back end of the rotation and add depth to the pitching staff would be reasonable I believe, trading for 1 year of Bieber doesn’t fit the Orioles team roster construction building goals I believe, especially at his current TV of 50. That’s just way to much prospect capital to move which the Orioles need to hold onto for the next playoff waive coming during the next 5 years.
Dude, trading for Bieber would be more than 1 yr. It would be for 2 postseasons and maybe 3. The O's have a backlog of position prospects that could stand to be thinned a bit. The O's are a postseason threat to any team. Especially with a guy like Bieber heading up their rotation. He makes more sense for them right now than Quantrill. Quantrill is a good #3 or #4. Go compare his performance numbers to other #3/#4 SP. Not only is he that, but he's a good one regardless of what his "peripherals" suggest. After more than 500 IP at the ML I think it's time we admit that those metrics don't apply to Quantrill very well. I agree, the O's should hang onto Mullins. They should also hang onto Hays who is blistering the ball this season again. Bieber for Bradish, Westburg and Cowser is a fair deal for both parties. It gives Cleveland some building blocks and Baltimore one of the better SP in the league for at least 2 postseasons. If they decided to deal him after this season or prior to next season's deadline they could probably recoup some of what they gave up to get him.
Both teams say no, 100% hypothetical.
Hey Jack. As a Guardians' fan I decline this deal because Williams is going to be/should be a vital part of Cleveland's next successful postseason team. He's a FOR SP with the type of talent that Cleveland can't come close to affording on the open market. If I were an O's fan I'd make this deal in a minute because of their OF depth and talent. SP like Williams are hard to find and nearly impossible to get your hands on before they get crazy expensive. Also, I would think the O's are in a position to deal for a SP of Bieber's ilk. They have some young SP to deal like Bradish along with guys like Westburg, Norby, Cowser and Mayo. That's my $.02.
Thanks for the comment! I definitely agree about Cleveland's need for internally developed pitching options. However, I feel like they've established it as such an organizational strength that they likely won't have to deal in the high end FA market much. I get your point about not trading away those players as prospects though - as getting ace production for 700k/year is invaluable to the Guardians. For Bieber, I don't think the O's would be overly interested. I would expect they are focused on long term options rather than rentals. Another commenter made a smart point about Mullins that made me rethink this deal a bit. The O's have tons of OF depth in their system - but that depth is almost entirely corner OF profiles. No true >60 CF gloves on the way, and an extension might make a lot more sense for the O's, trading from their RF/LF depth rather than Mullins.
I don't know Jack. The O's have some good longterm SP possibilities already. If they want a better chance in the postseason this year then they'll need a FOR SP like Bieber IMO. You can read my reply to dajuba, but I don't think the O's should trade Mullins or Hays this season. Both don't reach FA until 2026 and are fantastic players. The O's have the prospect capital to get a deal done for Bieber without hurting themselves for the next few years. It will be interesting to see what they do, but I'm pulling for the O's to win it all this year since it's obvious Cleveland doesn't appear to have a chance.
