6I doubt that they make their outfield situation much worse to add more infielders.
This is a rebuild deal and the Guardians aren't rebuilding. Nice attempt to get some real good ML pitching and a top 100 prospect from the Reds POV though. Chernoff would get fired instantly if he did something like this. Cleveland already has a 1B that was every bit the prospect that E-S is and he's producing at the ML level. Easy no from Cleveland. You could get Bieber with Abbott and E-S......maybe.
Never happen. All 4 prospects from the Reds side are Krall trade aquisitions from last year. Those are the ones he wanted, and all 4 will be prominently featured on future Reds rosters. As will Will Benson btw.
I think if you are the Guards you take the talent here and worry about the positions when the time comes. I’m this trade the Reds get a high caliber starter along with a high-slugging prospect to add to their future outfield along with a bullpen/ back starter piece. The Guards get CES who they might have trouble finding a spot for. However maybe after this trade they trade Bell? Guards also get Marte who I think would get the keys to SS as I think he is better than Rocchio and the Reds also have no apparent spot for him. Guards also get two SP with solid ceilings. I think the Guards would have to make some other moves now though including trading Bell, Rocchio, Freeman. I think this trade opens up the possibility of Arias getting every day AB’s in right. This also means the Guards get two right handed bats to their lineup (Marte, and CES). So a lineup for Cleveland would look like this 1. Kwan (LF) L 2. Gimenez (2B) L 3. Ramirez (3B) S 4. J. Naylor (DH) L 5. Encarnacion-Strand (1B) R 6. Brennan (CF) L 7. Marte (SS) R 8. B. Naylor (C) L 9. Arias (RF) R SP 1. Mckenzie (IL) 2. Bibee 3. Allen 4. Civale 5. Quantrill 6. Williams/Cantillo/Gaddis
Dreadful trade for the Reds that slams their window shut. If they wanted to do something like this, they would've just signed Castillo to an extension last season rather than trading him. If the Reds are trading for starting pitching, it's going to be controllable, consistent mid-rotation types or guys that don't cost a ton to acquire (think Paul Blackburn off the Athletics).
I think Cleveland makes this trade in a heartbeat. In my opinion Marte will be better than Rocchio and Gimenez. CES is an absolute beast. You make room for these guys. Petty and Phillips will eventually fit into a monster starting staff with McKenzie, Bibee, Williams, Allen. Sign me up for that. Naylor is good, and one of the few guys having a good year, but he really is a platoon guy, he just is. Bell is the issue, clogging up a spot, and likely will in 2024 as well. He is probably untradable, and tough to eat that much $. So sit him, or DH him against lefties. Play CES at 1B and DH Naylor against righties. Way better than what they are doing now. Valera has lost his shine. Doubtful he’ll be anywhere near a top 100 prospect next year. Morris, meh. Bieber is the prize, but you’re asking the Reds to give up too much for him. Check back in 6 months. I bet the Reds will be giving 90 value for Cleveland’s 40.
