9cant believe it the math is PERFECT
As a Cleveland fan, sign me up.
there is no one in the pipeline in the 1B/DH mold. At AA it's Naranjo (70 WRC+) and at AAA it's Pries (90 WRC+ and Noel (70 WRC+). None of that is interesting aside from MAYBE Noel figuring things out as he is only 21 and will certainly get another crack at AAA next season (although it'll be the last one as he will be out of options after 2024). But after that large maybe, it's empty. Even if they just use Bell next year because he opts in, it's likely he isn't very good again, which makes it very hard to compete when your DH is not good. In the OF it's a bit better, but the OF needs some serious juice. At AA the only guy doing anything is Rodriguez, who is R5 eligible again this winter and might not even get added to the 40 man. At AAA, Gonzalez is hitting better after an awful start at MLB/AAA but is still a rather large risk moving forward given his batted ball profile. Valera has pretty consistent health issues and has not played well this year. Next year is his last option year just like Noel, so he also only really has one more kick at the can in the ML before needing to be ready. Kjerstad immediately moves into Valera tier for a corner OF spot, and helps to move Straw to the bench with likely Brennan moving to CF. An OF of Kwan, Brennan and either Valera or Kjerstad next year is much better than what it is now. Heck, Kjerstad might even be ready NOW, he has a 155 WRC+ thru AA/AAA this season. And Mayo immediately moves into "next guy up for 1B/DH duties"
Oh and sorry I replied to the wrong person, that was supposed to be above
Sadly it's not what Cleveland wants...
I agree with pezzicle, this is exactly what Cleveland wants. I don’t understand the mindset that everything has to revolve around 2023. Cleveland is 9th in the AL in W/L %. They are not good. Bieber should be traded, and should have been traded in the offseason to maximize his value. Huge mistake. So you get the best players you can and this is one of the better deals I have seen. Cleveland should do this in a heartbeat.
Outside of the timeline being a little off, I'd say it's exactly what they want. As a CLE fan, they are looking for power in the corners. This gives them exactly that and both are likely ready by this time next year at the latest
So where is Mayo going to play? Plus Cleveland does need RH bat production and as soon as possible. I don't think this helps Cleveland at all in 23...
What do you mean where is he going to play? He can share 1B/DH duties with Naylor. Bell has a player option so he has half a year to play better. If he does, he may opt out, and if he doesn't, CLE can either trade him to someone for basically nothing if he isn't valuable enough, eat some money, or just DFA him. And as stated, he likely isn't ready until June anyway so they can just keep Bell until then if he opts in If CLE is trading Bieber they are basically waving the shite flag in 2023. Trading Bieber doesn't help them at all in 23 and if they thread the needle on this trade and get assets that only help for another few years I think it will be a massive mistake. Trading Bieber frees up too many IP for a rotation already relying on 3 rookie pitchers who will be in innings limits. A Bieber trade is unlikely for that exact reason, but if it does happen, I don't think they will be all that concerned about 2023. 2024-2026 will be much more what they are focused on
