3Too much going on in this trade for the Rays. Let the Rays keep Auer and send Clase to the Padres. Take them out of the deal and this trade is essentially B.Lowe for a few months of Snell and 1.5 years of Sewald. I’d love to see the Rays acquire Snell and Sewald but not at the expense of B.Lowe, who seems to be hitting at his hold dominant level.
Could look at it from the perspective that Clase is a younger, better version of Auer. So the Rays get an upgrade in their for a 22 year old who is really struggling in AA this year. Rays are going to have to get some rentals to close this thing out. They need a starter and a reliever in the worst way.
I agree the Rays should bring in some rentals or new bodies for 2023. I don't agree that Clase is a better version of Auer, not at all. Auer is a legitimate top flight defensive CFer, which the Rays prioritize more than anything else in the field. He's got speed, good fielding instincts and a rocket arm. Clase, on the other hand, has a noodle arm, which just won't work for the Rays at CF. Auer has struggled some in AA at the plate, but he's been hitting better of late. Rays like him and I doubt they'd want to move him for just another prospect.
