11The Brewers don't need Wiemer, but they also don't need more very weak hitting infielders, . At least Wiemer plays elite defense. The problem is Arias offers the Brewers nothing. Lefties have given the Brewers fits for years and Arias' inability to hit LHP, low OBP, and high K rate (33%) doesn't help his cause. He'd be organizational depth.
I don't see Arias as having elite defense. Right now he would be in the minors for Milwaukee because he really doesn't give them anything they don't already have. Because he can't hit lefties makes it worse. I would imagine to get Wiemer he would have to be packaged with somebody (Small/Rea) for something like Hentges and Gimenez.
You know Cleveland just signed Gimenez to a big, long extension right? He isn't available period... and honestly, yes Arias has some flaws, aka hitting lefties, but he is a plus fielder at both SS and 1B and internally in Cleveland, if we didn't keep JRam, he was likely the future 3B since he has a much better power profile than most. The kid, hits it hard and he hits right handers extremely hard... Also he is 23 so he's super young. I'm not saying he is perfect but his value is about spot on here and if he gets even league average against lefties, he will be a monster...
Speaking of not seeing... ...did you see Wiemer was demoted for lack of production.. to the Nashville Sounds.. Stupid Homer Trade # 1,200,982: Hentges and Gimenez and Arias for Wiemers.. HARD PASS...
Very poor take on the 23 yr old Arias. It doesn't matter because he isn't going anywhere and is likely going to be Cleveland's SS for years. His floor is Adames and his ceiling is higher. Weimer for Hentges and Gimenez is nothing but a pure homer take.
hmmmm..... Both teams can look at this deal with a certain level of concern and optimism.. At the end of the evaluation.. if both teams risk appetite is such that they believe this is the "best" they're going to do for "their" guy.. then they'd both do it.. Arias fills a left side of the infield role while reducing the glut of OF'ers on the ML Roster.. With the return of Garret Mitchell, the re-emergence of Yelli..and the coming talents of Frelick and Taylor.. this is a good time to add more dirt people.. The Guardians are in need of all that Wiemer brings.. save for the K-rate..which is absolutely a red flag.. Arias' red flag is his inability to hit LHP's.. History has shown that both of these guys' faults are not issues from their minor league and amateur careers.. Early career anomalies are like that.. IOW..Wiemer will get his K-rate under control and smacking the ball against LHP's should regress back to the norm... Good deal...
I think your opinion on this trade is spot on. I can see both teams doing this trade if they felt the future was brighter for the players involved. From a Brewers standpoint, the future projection of Turang may be the deciding factor. Fans from both teams can probably see both the advantages and disadvantages of this trade but it's a fair proposal.
Giminez will be gone before 2026. They aren't paying him the crazy bumps his extension has. Arias was 9/105 vs LHP with 53 K's. IF he never swung at a pitch , both his hit total and K total would go down, Ks maybe more.
Weimer and Arias profile remarkably similarly. Both bats are scuffling a bit at the major league level, both showing flashes of power and hard contact potential, making them breakout candidates in the next season or so, and both showing off elite defense at a premium position in the majors. If Arias offers the Brewers nothing, then so does Weimer, and you're not gonna get better return for "nothing"... Both teams would be betting on the ceilings of the return, not the current performance. Granted if that's not what the Brewers want right now so be it, Arias is clearly a flawed player and a bit of a project. Guards have a handful of other middle infielders to deal if they'd prefer, but the balance would need to be adjusted. I can't imagine Freeman or Tena would make more sense than Arias, Martinez is on a down year, and Rocchio would cost more. If Guards really wanted Weimer what would it take?
On paper, I can see why both teams take this and why both teams don't... My question is, what is Milwakee doing with Adames since he's got one year left? If Adames is being dealt, getting Arias makes 100% sense to me from Milwakees standpoint since at the end of the day, they could put up similar numbers in everyday roles. I have even seen comps to Adames for Arias... With the fact Weimer can play CF at such a solid clip though, I feel like he is still a way higher value as a player than Arias to me... I feel like Milwakee wouldn't do this one... At least I wouldn't trade Weimer if I was Milwakee...
Look at Arias' splits before you judge him... .285/.348/.468 vs right handers... He sucks right now against lefties... his SO rate is way below 30 against right handed pitchers... Also he is graded a plus fielder at SS and 1B... He also looked fairly good in LF/RF and the other INF positions. The dude can field and hit right handers... If worst comes to worst, he is a strong side platoon, utility man... That's his worst case scenario.
