8I don’t think this enough for the Mets. They can look elsewhere on the trade market get better starters for less.
Such as whom?
Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander obviously… Cease is era is way up. Snell, Civale They are all going to be hard to pry away. They are also a lot of fa pitchers available, which might open up the trade market. A teams signs a pitcher maybe they have dark horse on the staff that gets traded. It’s a maybe but I wouldn’t pull this trade if I was the white Sox
Are you saying that Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander are "obviously" better options for the Mets to trade for instead of Dylan Cease?
No it’s called having a sense of humor. You should try it sometime.
Cease is a guy with 2 years of control, has an increasing arb cost probably around the 9-10 mil mark next year, and the ChiSox are not competing at all. He's a prime candidate to be moved. There are only so many of these types that make sense for rebuilding teams. Keller from PIT, Singer from KC (maybe). After that, most teams that do have a guy like Cease are competing and most likely not moving them for prospects. So, my question still stands, you say there are better and cheaper options (I'm assuming you mean prospect wise), but who are they? Snell is a FA to be with a QO, and Cleveland is more likely to move Bieber and his big last year of a salary vs. Civale, who is cheap and has 3 more years of control. The Mets are going to fill out almost 3 SP slots if you don't put your faith in Lucchesi, Peterson, Megill, or Butto. So, Cease gives them 2 years of control at a relatively acceptable salary level. ChiSox are not competing, get a SP to backfill for Cease going and get 2 prospects that may meet the timeline for when the ChiSox can start competing again, while shedding salary in the short term. Mets leverage their prospects without hurting the major league ready guys in Mauricio/Baty/etc.
Cease is a good option but other teams could offer more than that trade. Cohen said he’s not going to trade his prospects. The Mets will sign three starters maybe not top tier but they will go the signing route. Payroll isn’t an issue.
Cohen said he was building a pipeline, and that pipeline doesn't just mean graduating prospects, but using prospects as trade capital too. This team is going to max out on space, both with the roster and the 40 man, and the payroll isn't infinite. The above is a fair trade, and sure, someone could always overpay, but this exercise isn't about overpayments. It's fair trade value, and this trade provides value to both teams. And you say payroll isn't an issue, and I'll agree that Cohen isn't shy on spending, but just spending on FAs isn't feasible long term as you invariably end up with guys like Marte or Carrasco, who are dead money at the end of their contracts. The Mets will sign FAs, no doubt, but nothing but FA signings is not sustainable.
