Interesting! Both Frazier (iffy defense) and Martinez (injuries, struggles in the rotation) have their warts, but this makes this a perfect buy-low trade on both ends. Martinez and his contract are likely a better fit for the Yankees, anyway, and they last few years the Cardinals have shown a willingness to sacrifice a little defense in the corner outfield spots (Jose Martinez, etc.) Great work!

Yankees could try and stretch martinez out to be a starter again. He performed at almost ace levels 2015-2017. Frazier is interesting, his bat has huge potential and he was not considered a liability in the field until his concussion last year and has not been the same since. It seems like he could improve with a change of scenery and as he gets further away from the concussion. A risky trade from the yankees perspective but I think a risk worth taking. If Martinez can move back to the rotation he has a higher upside than anyone available and is controlled long term. Id rather trade frazier for him than frazier + for the usual names we have been hearing. I think the cardinals would be crazy to reject this deal if they consider martinez a reliever.

The Cardinals have a glut of outfielders as is (Bader, O'Neill, J. Martinez, Fowler who is unmoveable, Ozuna for a few more months, Dylan Carlson who's ETA is 2020 and whose prospect cred keeps growing, Randy Arozarena is having a very good year in AAA and will be part of the conversation next year, Lane Thomas is around as a depth guy). With all due respect to Frazier, I'm not sure he justifies adding another option into the mix unless it's part of multiple other corresponding moves that clear a lot of depth. Particularly since Bader, O'Neill, J. Martinez, and Carlson are either pre-arb or locked into affordable deals. They also need Martinez the starter next season, which is surely their intent, particularly with Wacha and Wainwright almost certainly gone next year. Dealing him now would be dealing him at the lowest value he's had in something like 5 years, when they could just bring him back to the rotation next year and let him recoup value. Plus his contract is so team-friendly that it's not like they gain a ton of flexibility by moving him now.

Agreed on the outfielders, thats fair. As far as cmartinez, I read on mlbtr they want to trade him, hence the proposal. Personally makes no sense to me to trade him now when hes low value and has said he wants to start
