4Maeda's contract structure makes him an interesting trade candidate. Obviously, if LA refuses to use him as a starter (thus manipulating his incentive bonuses), I can't blame Maeda for wanting something else. But how would the Phillies use Maeda? Starting him would only cost them money. But using him in relief would only make him disgruntled. It would likely require a contract restructuring.
His valuation is tricky for exactly those reasons.
Are there many players who have two ways for his value to fluctuate—both his salary AND his production?
Nope. This one is pretty unique, because there is an interdependency between those two elements that you don't find in others, and they contradict each other. There are of course guys who have incentives in their contracts, but those don't contradict -- if they hit their milestones, it means they get more salary, but it also means they're producing well, so the arrows are going the same way. In this case, the arrows are clashing.
