Brewers: In this trade the Brewers get OF/1B Pavin Smith, a left handed bat who will probably get the majority of at bats playing 1B verses right handed pitching. Clarke fills in as an added relief pitcher that fills the gap left when Milwaukee traded 2 relievers to Tampa Bay. Arizona: Is building for the future. Perez is only 18 but is the Brewers number 3 prospect and grades 50 or over in all categories. Ray is the Brewers number 24 prospect and ready to be tested in the major leagues. He is a former #1 pick that hasn't yet justified that rating but Arizona can give him the opportunity to finish the year in the majors. Vogelbach is the left handed bat at 1B to give Walker days off against certain right handed pitching. The Brewers would have to believe Smith can be a future full time starter at 1B and/or OF to make this trade but if Sterns thinks that he is they could certainly use his bat at 1B starting this year. The left handed bat would be a good fit in Milwaukee. Arizona needs to believe the scouting reports on Perez to make this trade. But if they do, they make a big step for a possible star outfielder in 2023 or 2024. I'm not sure if the Diamondbacks would want Vogelbach but if not, another lottery type prospect can replace him in this trade.

I love the explanation that comes with this trade. However, I totally disagree with this trade. Smith looks like he will be a big league hitter for many years to come and is as cheap as it gets. DBacks have 4 great OF prospects that are relatively close and that’s not counting Smith. Unload vets like Escobar Ahmed M Kelly Walker and even Peralta.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my explanation. I am in agreement with you regarding Smith. I think he will be a good MLB player for a long time and the Dbacks would definitely rather trade the players you mentioned. The Brewers only hope for the Dbacks to make this trade is if they value Perez and Ray higher then their current OF prospects, and from your prospective that is probably not the case. I figured if any team would turn this trade down it would be AZ. Thanks for your comments.
