There's a lot to unpack here. (1) The Dodgers get Aroz and Eflin from the Rays. Aroz has hit between 124-127 for the past 3 years, and after a crazy bad slow start to 2024 (39 wRC+ through April 30th), he is back to normal (hitting 131 wRC+ since May 1st, playing every day without platooning). Dodgers would love to add him, both on the field and from a marketing angle. Eflin is a solid #2/3 for most teams and only costs a prorated $11MM in 2024. He shores up the Dodgers' rotation. (2) The Blue Jays give up on 2024 and trade Jansen, a rental, and Bichette (who has 1 year of control after this year) to the Rays. In return, they get a good pitching prospect (Ferris), a former top 50 middle-infield prospect who is blocked with the Rays (Mead), a really exciting OF prospect (Hope) and a lotto pick at Catcher. That's not a bad haul for a catching rental and 1 year of a SS playing pretty bad in 2024. (3) The Rays retool on the fly and use this trade to improve their catcher position dramatically for the playoff run in 2024, improve their SS in 2024 (yeah, a bad year from Bichette is still an improvement to Walls) and in 2025 (2025 could turn into a huge HR for the Rays if Bichette rebounds in a walk year), and possibly even improve their COF position if Vargas continues hitting as well as he has hit so far in 2024; however, the Rays are prepared to go from Aroz to Palacios in this scenario because Vargas is about the future.

Eflin & Arozarena are still owed about $9m this year, I think the Rays will need to pay them down to the major league minimum for the Dodgers to take the deal, I think any trade with the Dodgers will require consideration and the implications of where they are tax wise.

That's insane. The Dodgers are the richest team in baseball. They have built a very good but not great team for 2024, and this is their final opportunity to improve it for the playoff race. Are they really going to go into the deadline saying they won't accept any salary above league minimum levels? Of course not. That's called being penny wise pound foolish.

Lux won't interest the Rays, even if they were willing to pay down perfectly reasonable salaries. I wrote more in the trade proposal itself.
