6Ignore the cash. This is mostly based on the Pirates taking on all 160m owed between JC and Musgrove. Obviously would never happen but clearing that money from SD books really helps them short and longterm. They could sign a Lorenzen type to fill the hole with the cash. Merrill really doesn't have a position on this roster and the guys coming from Pittsburgh fill out the current 26 man. Marlins fans may want more here but getting your SS and catcher position solidified from 2025-? Would be huge. Makes the Pirates an NL central contender immediately. Give the rotation an excellent 1-2 for years. Could even allow them to deal Keller after this season.
Merill gonna play the outfield or a different position that's not SS. None of the players the Padres would get would be worth Joe or Merill. The salary relief also isn't enough to justify the hefty price they're giving up. I would just want to give up JC or Kim, not Musgrove, Darvish, Merill, or any of our top 10 prospects, Tatis, Manny, or Xander.
Oh it's completely farfetched but my opinion is that the $ is way more of an issue than they're saying(kills leverage) and what fans want to believe. They were spending $ they didn't have counting on 81 sellouts and playoff revenue to make up the difference. Also the owner extending knowing he was sick and going for it while he was still alive. Joe's value on here will jump up some when he shows he's healthy but that's mostly why I added the cash to account for that. Padres have a good star led core but after that there's so many questions and a lack of major league ready depth. Putting Merrill in the OF seems like a complete waste of his value. Again though complete fantasy trade that would never happen. I do think the Padrss would do well to dump some of that longterm cash so they could make real additions down the road
If SD were to trade with the Pirates or Marlins, I would be okay with trading top prospects and MLB players like JC, Kim, etc if SD would get Bryan Reynolds and Mitch Keller from Pittsburgh or Jesus Luzardo from the Marlins.
As a Pirate fan I don’t see where this benefits the Padres other than dumping salary. So yeah, let’s do it. I’ll call my guy so please call yours!
My thinking is the Padres can't afford their payroll going forward. They couldn't even afford it before. Dropping 160m in future $ will go a long way to help them add. The guys they're get are also cheap and controllable that can fill in on the major league team now. Padres are in big trouble $ and roster wise
