KC gets a nice package of 3 high-floor players with some decent upside in exchange for 2 controllable relievers and a little bit of cash. Allows for Smith/O’Hearn to rotate between 1B and DH, Fowler to project as a potential LH 4th outfielder, and Mateo to fit at 2B, CF, or SS. NY rids themselves of Lowrie’s contract and picks up some useful, cheap pieces in Hill and Pinder. Nimmo and Smith hurt to give up, but Smith’s playing time is cut by the presence of Alonso, and the outfield could end up being even more crowded with a potential Marte acquisition. Oakland swallows a little bit of cash to bring Lowrie back and put him in familiar spot to rehab with the hope that he is able to contribute on a part-time basis. Big gets are Nimmo and Barlow, who give the team a much needed left-handed bat to go with a controllable right-handed reliever Big caveat is that the cash going to Oakland is coming from KC, so theoretically, Lowrie would be shipped "through" KC. Not sure of the legality of this, and there would need to be approval from the commissioners office, but it would allow for KC to essentially buy Dom Smith

Interesting. But the big issue with Lowrie is: what if he can't play?

It's definitely an issue, but my thought with the A's 2B situation is that the available options (Cabrera, Sogard, Frazier, Gennett, etc) all have fairly low upsides and it's likely with any 2B acquisition that the team can position itself to upgrade at the deadline (where the prices for position players haven't been very high the past few seasons) if whatever pre-season acquisition doesn't work out. So my mindset here is to assume Lowrie is a salary dump and let him rehab through May or June, give Barreto 200 - 250 ABs to sink or swim, and be pleasantly surprised if Lowrie gives you something as a semi-regular. If he can't and Barreto falls on his face, you bite the bullet and make a midseason trade to upgrade the position.
